Unable to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) under customer or reseller account in Plesk: QR code is not displayed

kb: bug Plesk for Linux ext: mfa

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

  • When setting up Multi-Factor Authentication for an administrator or a customer user in Plesk, the QR code is not displayed on the Extensions > MFA > Enable MFA screen.
  • Clicking Could not scan the QR code? and copying the value from Enter the key returns an Undefined value.
  • The issue occurs when the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) extension version 1.3.2-18453 is installed.

Cause

The issue is caused by extension bug identified as EXTPLESK-14305.

The bug will be fixed in future updates of the extension. One can monitor the Plesk Changelog for release notes on when this bug is fixed.

Resolution

Until the bug is fixed, the following workaround by skipping the first enforced try can be applied:

  1. Log into Plesk as Administrator
  2. Edit the Plesk panel.ini configuration file
  3. Add the directive allowSkipEnforce = true to the section [ext-mfa].
  4. Log in to Plesk as Customer or Reseller and click Skip for now when the MFA asks for enabling.
  5. Enable MFA after skipping:
    • For affected customer account: click on the customer’s profile name > Edit Profile > Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and then Change the current MFA settings to setup the MFA.
    • For affected reseller account: go to Profile > Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) section and click Change the current MFA settings to setup the MFA.
