Symptoms

Issuing or renewing Let's Encrypt SSL certificate on Plesk fails:

Could not obtain directory: cURL error 35: OpenSSL SSL_connect: SSL_ERROR_SYSCALL in connection to acme-v02.api.letsencrypt.org:443

Cause

Incident on the Let's Encrypt side on July 9, 2024.

The incident was resolved by Let's Encrypt on the same day.

Resolution

Issue was resolved, no additional actions are required.

  • I encountered a problem with Let's Encrypt on Plesk running on Rocky Linux 8 after upgrading PHP from OS vendor 7.2 to 8.2. After troubleshooting, I found that downgrading PHP back to version 7.4 resolved the issue, and Let's Encrypt is now functioning correctly.
