How to configure Plesk if primary DNS zones for domains reside on external nameservers?

Question

  • How to configure Plesk if DNS zones for domains are hosted on an external NS DNS server?
  • How should I configure a domain in Plesk if its primary DNS zone is external to Plesk?
  • A few domains loading from my Plesk server use external DNS zones as their primary zones, what DNS configuration should I set on the side of Plesk for them?

Answer

By default, domains created in Plesk use the local Plesk DNS server and have local primary DNS zones for name resolution. If the primary DNS zone for one domain or all domains already exists on external servers and should not exist on the side of your Plesk server, you should apply one of the following solutions:

Warning: Before doing this, make sure all DNS zones and the DNS records within them for the related domains are created on the external DNS servers

Use external primary DNS server for all domains hosted in Plesk
  1. Log into Plesk

  2. Uninstall the Plesk DNS server service by going to Tools & Settings > Updates > Add/Remove Components and deselect the corresponding component (BIND DNS server support on Linux or Microsoft DNS server on Windows)

    Note: Managing DNS zones for any domains through Plesk will not be possible, because the external DNS server and the zones for the domains that reside on it will be used in its place for all related queries

  3. Press Continue
Use external primary DNS zone for a single domain hosted in Plesk
  1. Log into Plesk
  2. For any domain that will use the external servers, go to Domains > example.com > Hosting & DNS > DNS and press Disable
