Cannot issue Let's Encrypt certificate: The "Certificates per Registered Domain" rate limit has been exceeded

Plesk for Windows Plesk for Linux kb: technical ext: le ABT: Group B

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux
  • Plesk for Windows

Symptoms

  • Upon the attempt to install or renew Let's Encrypt, Plesk returns the following error message:

    PLESK_ERROR: Error: Could not issue a Let's Encrypt SSL/TLS certificate for example.com.
The "Certificates per Registered Domain" rate limit has been exceeded for example.com. Let's Encrypt allows no more than 50 certificates to be issued per registered domain, per week.

Cause

Rate limit of certificates that can be issued for a domain per week exceeded 50, so the certificate issuing was temporarily banned.

Resolution

There is no way to reset or override the ban. You’ll need to wait until the rate limit expires after a week.
For example, if 25 certificates were issued on Tuesday and 25 more certificates on Friday, another 25 attempts can be performed again starting the next Tuesday.
