Subdomain zones are not synced by the Amazon Route 53 extension

kb: bug Plesk for Linux ABT: Group A

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

Subdomains that have the DNS service enabled can't sync their zones with Route 53, and show this error in Extensions > Amazon Route 53 > Mass Management

Error: Failed zone creation subdomain.example.com.: Cannot create hosted zone with DelegationSetId DelegationSetId:N12KZABLJLJHOU as the DNS Name subdomain.example.com. conflicts with existing ones sharing the delegation set

Cause

Two zones with the same main domain (example.com and subdomain.example.com) can't have common name servers. This is caused by an Amazon limitation: ConflictingDomainExists. It's described in both the Route 53 and Plesk extension docs. Plesk is working on improving the error reported.

The internal task to improve error reporting is EXTCERT-1209

Resolution

This can't be addressed from Plesk's end because the limitation comes from Amazon. To work around the issue:

  • Only use the Add Subdomain button to create subdomains
  • Keep DNS turned off for subdomains
  • Manage DNS for subdomains through the main domain zone at Domains > example.com > DNS Settings
