Plesk is unable to retrieve keys: Unable to read Plesk license key

Symptoms

  • Errors like these appear in /var/log/plesk/panel.log:

    Could not open Repository at "/etc/sw/keys": Cannot open file: /etc/sw/keys/info

  • Trying to fix permissions on the files inside /etc/sw/keys fails, with missing file errors:

    chmod: cannot access '/etc/sw/keys/restart/*': No such file or directory

Cause

Some of Plesk files used to check the licenses were damaged or removed.

Resolution

Repair of replace these files

  1. Connect to the server via SSH
  2. Run the repair utility the check and fix these files

    # plesk repair fs -system

If the issue persists, contact Plesk Support to get the missing files replaced.

  1. Log in to the affected server over SSH
  2. Run this command to get the OS and architecture

    # plesk -v
    Product version: Plesk Obsidian 18.0.68.1
    OS version: AlmaLinux 9.5 x86_64

  3. Set up a test server from dumps.plesk.tech that matches the OS and architecture
  4. Copy the missing files from this server to the customer's server
