How to disable 2FA for Plesk login

Plesk for Windows kb: how-to Plesk for Linux ABT: Group B

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux
  • Plesk for Windows

Question

Unable to log in to Plesk due to Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) issues (code not working or access problem). How can I disable 2FA and regain access?

Answer

Note: This procedure requires root/administrator access and must be performed via command line.

1. Connect to the Plesk server:

  • Linux: via SSH
  • Windows Server: via RDP

2. Run the following command to disable the extension (on Windows Server, start a command prompt as an Administrator):

  • For Google Authenticator extension:

    # plesk bin extension --disable google-authenticator

  • For Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) extension:

    # plesk bin extension --disable mfa

  • If you get this message:

The extension google-authenticator is not installed.

    exit status 1

    Try this instead:

    plesk bin extension --disable mfa

  • Disabling the MFA extension seems like only half of the needed steps. How do you then reset the extension to be able to set MFA up again and use it again in future?

Just leaving the MFA extension disabled solves the immediate problem (login without MFA), but not the long term problem (re-secure the account with MFA).

Simply re-enabling the MFA extension again seems to revert it to its prior state (the old MFA codes are required)?

Seems that the missing piece is to use this instead:

plesk ext mfa config update --disable <user>
