PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager) is reported as down after Plesk update

Plesk for Linux kb: technical ext: watchdog

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

  • the following notification emails are sent out:

CONFIG_TEXT: From: watchdog@example.com
Subject: PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager) on example.com is down

  • the OS vendor PHP-FPM service is installed, but not active. That can be confirmed by the following command:

# systemctl status php-fpm
● php-fpm.service - The PHP FastCGI Process Manager
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/php-fpm.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: inactive (dead)

Cause

Watchdog is sending false-positive notifications for disabled OS vendor's php-fpm.service - even though the service is not active, Watchdog is treating this as a malfunction.

This is caused by a known bug identified as EXTPLESK-8912 in the Watchdog extension, which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Once the update is released you may find the bug ID in the Plesk Obsidian Change Log.

Resolution

Since this is a false-positive, it is safe to ignore the notifications.

As a workaround, one can execute the following steps to disable the notifications:

  1. Log in to Plesk.

  2. Go to Plesk > Extensions > Watchdog > PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager)

  3. Uncheck the option "Monitor the service"

  4. Save the changes.

Note: The functionality of PHP-FPM for hosted websites is not affected.
