Question
- Is it possible to fully encrypt a backup that has been created by Plesk?
Answer
Backup encryption for certain Plesk backup contents is a feature that is provided via Plesk by default and is controlled by logging into Plesk and going to Tools & Settings > Backup Manager > Settings > Backup security settings.
Once there, you have the option to select to encrypt Plesk database passwords contained in backups with the Plesk encryption key or with a password.
The key is unique for each Plesk installation. Backups encrypted with the key can be restored only in the Plesk installation where they were created and cannot be restored in another Plesk installation.
With that said, the Plesk internal key encrypts only certain data in a backup, but not the whole backup.
If you store backups in remote cloud storage, you can enable backup encryption on the cloud storage side.
