Question

Is it possible to secure webmail on domain without web hosting with an SSL certificate?

Answer

Yes, that is possible via the SSL It! extension. This possibility was introduced on version 1.4.0 from the extension.
It can be done as follows:

  1. Log into Plesk;

  2. Make sure that the SSL It! extension is installed at Extensions menu > My Extensions > SSL It!:

    • If it is not installed, go to Extensions > look for SSL It! > click Install.
    • If it is installed, make sure that the extension is on version 1.4.0; if it is on an older version, go to Extensions > Updates > click Check Now > then select SSL It! and click Update to update the extension.

  3. Go to Domains > example.com > SSL/TLS Certificates > Install > leave the option Secure webmail on this option enabled > click Get it free:

    It still requires web hosting.  Perhaps I'm missing something?  Please make the instructions clearer.  When you click install, it tries to install a Letsencrypt certificate which requires hosting of the website.  When the wbesite is hosted separately elsewhere, this cannot succeed.

    It turns out you must NOT tick Secure domain.  But... you can't then also secure the mail server.  When you tick "Assign the certificate to the mail domain", it also ticks "Secure domain", then you need hosting.

    In found the procedure clear, it worked for me.

    Another question is: how to do the same via CLI ?

    I tried:

    plesk bin extension --exec letsencrypt cli.php -d webmail.domain.com -m info@domain.com

    but the answer is:

    The execution of cli.php has failed with the following message:
    Could not find any domain to install.

    So i added the domain name:

    plesk bin extension --exec letsencrypt cli.php -d domain.com -d webmail.domain.com -m info@domain.com

    and the answer is:

    The execution of cli.php has failed with the following message:
    There is no phisical hosting on the domain domain.com.

    this of course because the goal is to enable a certificate for webmail.domain.com where domain.com has no phisical hosting.

    Any advice?
