Question
How to copy content of a website hosted in Plesk to another domain / subdomain / subpage / external FTP storage?
Answer
Note: Website Copying feature transfers website content only. Local MySQL / MS SQL Server databases, if the website uses any, will not be touched. Copy them separately.
Note: To copy a WordPress website, we recommended to use the WordPress cloning feature instead of Website Copying. The cloning feature is available out of the box for Web Pro and Web Host editions and is available for a fee for the Web Admin edition.
-
Create a new domain or a subdomain on the Domains page in Plesk.
Note: If you want to access a cloned domain from the Internet, create a temporary domain.
-
Go to Domains > example.com (domain you want to copy files from) > Dashboard tab > Website Copying.
-
For Site name, select the newly created domain / subdomain
-
Select what to do with existing files.
-
Click OK to start the copying process.
-
Now the website content of example.com is available at the chosen domain / subdomain (clone.example.com in this example).
To copy the website content from https://www.example.com to https://www.example.com/clonewebsite, copy the content of httpdocs folder manually:
- Log in to Plesk.
-
Go to Domains > example.com > Dashboard tab > Files > httpdocs.
-
Click on
> Create Directory > and specify the name of the directory where the files will be copied, for example clone.
-
Click OK.
-
Select all files and folders inside "httpdocs" directory, except the newly created clone folder.
-
Click Copy.
-
Select httpdocs > clone and click OK.
-
Go to Domains > example.com > Website Copying.
-
Select FTP storage.
-
Fill in the fields:
-
Server host name: Specify the hostname of the FTP storage, e.g. my.ftp.storage.com.
-
Port: The default FTP port is 21. If you use a custom port number, specify it.
-
Directory: Specify the directory on the FTP storage to which the website will be saved, e.g. /backup/example.com.
-
Username: Specify the FTP username which is used to log in to the FTP storage.
-
Password: Specify the password of the FTP user.
-
FTP connection method
-
Active mode (recommended)
Plesk sends its IP address and port number on which it will listen to an external server, and the server initiates a TCP connection. This mode is recommended when the Plesk-managed server is not protected by a firewall.
Note: If Plesk fails to connect to the external FTP account, select the Passive mode option and try again.
-
Passive mode
This mode can be used when the Plesk-managed server is behind a firewall and is unable to accept incoming TCP connections.
-
-
-
Click OK to start the copying process.
