Plesk or system upgrade fails: error processing package shim-signed

Symptoms

Plesk or system update fails with the error message:

CONFIG_TEXT: dpkg: error processing package shim-signed (--configure):
installed shim-signed package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
shim-signed

Cause

shim-signed is a package related to BIOS in Ubuntu. When Plesk tries to install components or updates, the operating system package manager process will fail because of the broken shim-signed package.

Resolution

  1. Connect to the Plesk server via SSH.

  2. Reconfigure dpkg database:

    # dpkg --configure -a

    solution does not work. Alle website are unaviable since Plesk update our server last night.

    Errors were encountered while processing:
    shim-signed
    needrestart is being skipped since dpkg has failed
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
