Is it possible to upgrade a Plesk server from CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 9?

Question

Plesk prepared a CLI script that in place converts Centos 7 to AlmaLinux 8. Is it possible to convert further to AlmaLinux 9?

Answer

Yes, it is possible to further convert to AlmaLinux 9. A direct one-step conversion from CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 9 is still not supported, however, the upgrade can be performed in place in two steps:

1. Convert the server from CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 8 using the centos2alma script by referring to the article on how to make an in-place upgrade of a Plesk server from CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 8.

2. Update the operating system to AlmaLinux 8.9, then convert the server from AlmaLinux 8 to AlmaLinux 9 using the almalinux8to9 script by referring to the article on how to make an in-place upgrade of a Plesk server from AlmaLinux 8 to AlmaLinux 9.

Note: Review the recommendations and limitations in both articles before starting, and create a server-wide backup and/or a server snapshot before each conversion step so it can be used as a recovery point in case the process fails.

In case the requirements for the in-place conversion are not met, Plesk supports direct migration from a CentOS 7 server to a new AlmaLinux 9 server with Plesk using the Plesk Migrator extension.

    Hi,

    i had cloned one of my Plesk-server (Plesk 18 and CentOS 7.9) - for migration-test.

    Migration from CentOS7.9 to AlmaLinux 8 seems to be working fine - detailed test after migration are outstanding.

    But with a view on https://endoflife.date/almalinux -> Alma 8 End of Support May 1st 2024.

    I need to ask is there a timeline for a Migration-Tool from Alma 8 to Alma 9?

    Even though AL8 development halts in May 2024, it'll still be supported with security updates up to May 2029. And it will be supported by Plesk by that time as well. Therefore, details of the upgrade scenario will be provided closer to that date.

    My server is a virtual server with plesk on Linode.com with CentOS 7.  Will this upgrade work fine?  Does plesk have a script to run to just to the upgrade for us?

    The script does not have blockers which depend on the hosting environment. The update would work as it should on any other hypervisor.
