502 Bad Gateway error when browsing password protected directory

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 11.0 for Linux
  • Plesk 11.5 for Linux
  • Plesk 10.4 for Windows

Symptoms

When you go to a protected directory in a web browser, it fails with an 502 Bad Gateway error after you enter the login and password

2013/07/31 23:59:27 [error] 3671#0: *209872 upstream prematurely closed connection while reading response header from upstream, client: 11.11.22.22, server: domain.tld, request: "GET /download/debian/ HTTP/1.1", upstream: "http://11.11.22.22:7080/download/debian/", host: "domain.tld"

Cause

This failure occurs due to timeout in your Nginx configuration.

Resolution

  1. Increase the following values in '/etc/nginx/nginx.conf' :

    http{
    ...
    ~#    fastcgi_buffers 8 16k;
    ~#    fastcgi_buffer_size 32k;
        fastcgi_buffers 8 128k;
        fastcgi_buffer_size 256k;
    ...
    }
    
  2. Restart the Apache and Nginx services:

    ~# /etc/init.d/apache restart
    
    ~# /etc/init.d/nginx restart
