Question
Do Plesk PHP packages have WebP support?
Answer
The GD library shipped with Plesk PHP 7.2 and higher supports WebP starting from Plesk Obsidian 18.0.27.
Update Plesk to the latest version to get this feature.
For older Plesk version, use the instructions from the following Plesk Forum page to compile GD module with WebP support:

GA Released, where is WEBP support?
Hello @Deniss,
Indeed WebP support is planned to be added to Plesk Obsidian after GA release, which was this week.
This means that WebP support is planned to be added in one of the future Plesk Obsidian updates.
The more precise ETA will be available later.

Hello Ivan. Thanks for info.
Any update on this?
Hello @Robert,
As soon as there'll be any news, the article will be updated.

Why is WEBP still not supported. It cant be so hard to add it for plesk php .
Or at least give us a way to add it manually
+1
Hello, it is on our roadmap and will be added later. To add this manually you need to build a custom PHP with a corresponding configure flag (
--with-webp-dir=/usr
) for WebP support:You are right, its possible to build an own PHP but, like you can read in the Article, its based on own risk.
Warning: ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW ARE TO BE PERFORMED AT OWN WILL AND RISK
Plesk is a payed solution and not Freeware or Open Source, so i will have all Components original and default,
to avoid problems.
WebP is a a bit new of course, but Google Pagespeed rates a Website down if WebP is not used. So its important
to get Plesk up to Date with these Feature.
Have a nice Weekend.
Rouven Schwarting Plesk is still flexible and allow you a lot of customization, you just need to do them in a recommended way. All guides we publish we verify and reuse several times first to make sure it works fine, however we don't perform automatic regular test on all kind of possible configuration to guarantee 100% working result for everyone, that's why we keep the warning.
We know about WebP value and we are for sure have plans to add this to Plesk. I'd say optimistic date is Q1 2020, thought it may change depending on other factors.
Also, if you believe that WebP support is worth adding for your site & business you may hire our Professional Services team to compile PHP for you.
Love the "hire our Professional Services team" upsell answer for a must-have feature with 0 (known) security risk.
It's not a "high candy" or "bells and whistles" request. It's a best practice in modern webdev, usually requested by our own customers.
Lack of "native" Plesk support for GD WEBP is a business loss in our highly competitive hosting industry.
Of course you could compile custom PHP, but your "guides" are missing an essential mention : lock your custom compile to prevent overriding on every Plesk update (especially if it's set to AUTO).
Any ETA for web-p support now GA release is out?
This is hugely important to our clients and we are considering moving away from Plesk if we cannot find a solution soon. Web-p is now seen as the gold standard for fast image loading and something our new website clients look for as a quick Google Page speed test will recommend it.
Any sort of firmer date for its implementation would be hugely helpful in persuading our clients we will be able to add it in the future. Many thanks.
Hello,
lenala and Paul Dunne
Thank you for the feedback and notice.
I will try to clarify more precise ETA.
As soon as there's be any news, I'll post it.
Hello Paul Dunne
The preliminary ETA is Q1 2020.
Fantastic, I appreciate the follow-up. We will eagerly await Q1 2020!
Paul Dunne
I just configured the pagespeed extension which serves the images in webp format, maybe you can give it a try as temporary workaround.
Where do we find this webp extension?
For apache the module comes with the extension: https://www.plesk.com/extensions/google-pagespeed-insights/.
For nginx you need to configure it manually: https://support.plesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006290974-How-to-enable-the-Google-PageSpeed-module-for-nginx-on-domain-in-Plesk-
Just make sure your not running both at the same time.
This is crazy, I wasted a lot of time with this just to find that it's a Plesk issue, if Plesk was free then I can understand things being way behind but this is not the case.
Pagespeed is not an option for me, it does work though, but I need to serve the webp images I already have in my cdn preserving their filenames.
I hope this will be resolved soon or I will also need to move away from Plesk, it's embarrassing explaining to clients that you can't accomplish something so simple.
Hello AndrewTRV
Thank you for the feedback.
Currently, the ETA is known to be Q1 2020.
As soon as there'll be additional news, the article will be updated.
Any news on WebP support? Our website get ranked badly as this is still not supported
Robert
No additional news so far, stay tuned for this article updates.
Hi there, any further news on webp support?
We reached end of February, 1st quarter of 2020 is vanishing, any announcement to come on the subject?
WebP is fully supported by all the major browser, except for Apple Safari (but there are polyfills and Apple is working on supporting it), This is not a small stuff needed by some exotic programmers....
Please urge a bit
So this is the last month for Q1 2020. Any news Ivan Postnikov about the implementation?
WebP is over 10 years old. :-)
Hello,

Would really like this feature too.
Hello everyone,
I will take some time to clarify if the ETA is the same or changed.
