You are right, its possible to build an own PHP but, like you can read in the Article, its based on own risk.

Warning: ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW ARE TO BE PERFORMED AT OWN WILL AND RISK

Plesk is a payed solution and not Freeware or Open Source, so i will have all Components original and default,
    to avoid problems.

WebP is a a bit new of course, but Google Pagespeed rates a Website down if WebP is not used. So its important
to get Plesk up to Date with these Feature.

    Have a nice Weekend.

Why is WEBP still not supported.  It cant be so hard to add it for plesk php .

Or at least give us a way to add it manually

Very disappointing, so from Q1 to maybe Q2 or maybe not.

    Hello @Deniss,

Indeed WebP support is planned to be added to Plesk Obsidian after GA release, which was this week.
This means that WebP support is planned to be added in one of the future Plesk Obsidian updates.

The more precise ETA will be available later.

Any ETA for web-p support now GA release is out?

This is hugely important to our clients and we are considering moving away from Plesk if we cannot find a solution soon. Web-p is now seen as the gold standard for fast image loading and something our new website clients look for as a quick Google Page speed test will recommend it.

Any sort of firmer date for its implementation would be hugely helpful in persuading our clients we will be able to add it in the future. Many thanks.

Hello Ivan, this is a huge disappointment for our business and our clients. Up until today, we had been told the Plesk release would be in Q1. Can you clarify what 'one of the focuses of RnD' means? Is this a confirmed ETA for a Q2 Plesk release, or is it only being looked at for the first time in Q2?

This is really holding back the websites we manage and penalizing our client rankings in Google compared to those sites who are able to use this technology. It would be great to have a better idea as to when this will actually be released, as we have been asking since October 2019.

I would like to be able to set realistic expectations with my clients who were all expecting this feature to be available by the end of Q1 so I need to know what to say to them now.

We reached end of February, 1st quarter of 2020 is vanishing, any announcement to come on the subject?

WebP is fully supported by all the major browser, except for Apple Safari (but there are polyfills and Apple is working on supporting it), This is not a small stuff needed by some exotic programmers....

    Please urge a bit

Betafer It is pretty simple, on centos 7.x for PHP 7.4 you can do the following :

    From the command line type...

    cd to/the/directory/where/you/want/to/prepare/the/installation

    yum install make gcc plesk-php74-devel libjpeg-turbo-devel libpng-devel libXpm-devel freetype-devel libwebp-devel

    wget http://be2.php.net/get/php-7.4.3.tar.gz/from/this/mirror

    tar -xzf mirror

    cd php-7.4.3/ext/gd

     /opt/plesk/php/7.4/bin/phpize

     ./configure --with-php-config=/opt/plesk/php/7.4/bin/php-config --with-webp --with-freetype --with-jpeg --with-xpm

     make

     mv /opt/plesk/php/7.4/lib64/php/modules/gd.so /opt/plesk/php/7.4/lib64/php/modules/gd.so_orig

     cp modules/gd.so /opt/plesk/php/7.4/lib64/php/modules/

     plesk bin php_handler --reread

     /opt/plesk/php/7.4/bin/php -m | grep gd

     rpm -e --justdb plesk-php74-gd

    Then it should work ....

So this is the last month for Q1 2020. Any news Ivan Postnikov about the implementation?
WebP is over 10 years old. :-)

Quite interesting reply from Plesk with the workaround that you JUST need corresponding configure flag (--with-webp-dir=/usr) to compile but takes month to implement by themself :)

This is crazy, I wasted a lot of time with this just to find that it's a Plesk issue, if Plesk was free then I can understand things being way behind but this is not the case.

Pagespeed is not an option for me, it does work though, but I need to serve the webp images I already have in my cdn preserving their filenames.

I hope this will be resolved soon or I will also need to move away from Plesk, it's embarrassing explaining to clients that you can't accomplish something so simple.

For apache the module comes with the extension: https://www.plesk.com/extensions/google-pagespeed-insights/.

For nginx you need to configure it manually: https://support.plesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006290974-How-to-enable-the-Google-PageSpeed-module-for-nginx-on-domain-in-Plesk-

Just make sure your not running both at the same time.

    Hello Ivan,

this is not acceptable. Our development team is ready with WebP because you gave us Q1 for the deployment.

Now another 3 months? For a a simple modification...? WebP is 10 years old!

    Hello @YS and Paul Dunne

    Thank you for the feedback.

Indeed, initially, Q1 was in plans. However, another functionality and fixes took more resources when expected.

    > Is this a confirmed ETA for a Q2 Plesk release, or is it only being looked at for the first time in Q2?

It was already checked and with high probability will be included in one of the Q2 updates.

For now, that's the most precise information available.

As soon as there'll be any news, the article will be updated.

    Thank you for understanding.

Yes, the article contains such notice to warn you that these steps should be performed with caution as these are not supported by Plesk

I just configured the pagespeed extension which serves the images in webp format, maybe you can give it a try as temporary workaround.
