Unable to create new database: mssqlmng failed: The file "mdf" is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or filegroup

Symptoms

  • Unable to create a new database for MS SQL server in Plesk:

    PLESK_ERROR: Create new database failed in Plesk: mssqlmng failed: The file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Plesk\Databases\MSSQL\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER2014\MSSQL\DATA\filename.mdf" is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or filegroup. The file must be decompressed. CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. 

  • MSSQL installation directory is compressed (files and folders shown in blue):
    2018-02-14_04_08_58-mRemoteNG_-_confCons.xml.png

Cause

MSSQL does not work with compressed files.

Resolution

  1. Connect to the server via RDP;

  2. Disable compression on the Plesk folder by unchecking the option marked on the screenshot (right side):

  3. Create database.
