Mailman admin page shows 504 Gateway Timeout

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

  1. Mailman administrators page http://lists.example.com/mailman/admin/mymaillist gives the following error:

    504 Gateway Timeout

    The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream server or application.
    Apache Server at lists.example.com Port 80
  2. There are the errors like as following in Apache error_log :

    [root@vps213 ~]# tail -fn0 /var/log/httpd/error_log
    [Fri Oct 07 23:32:09 2016] [warn] [client 10.20.30.40] Timeout waiting for output from CGI script /usr/lib/mailman/cgi-bin/admin, referer: http://lists.example.com/mailman/admin/mymaillist/logout
    [Fri Oct 07 23:32:09 2016] [error] [client 10.20.30.40] Script timed out before returning headers: admin, referer: http://lists.example.com/mailman/admin/mymaillist/logout
    [Fri Oct 07 23:33:09 2016] [warn] [client 10.20.30.40] Timeout waiting for output from CGI script /usr/lib/mailman/cgi-bin/admin, referer: http://lists.example.com/mailman/admin/mymaillist/logout

Cause

Stalled .lock files in /var/lock/mailman/ directory

Resolution

  1. Stop mailman service:

    # service mailman stop
  2. Delete stalled lock files for mymaillist from /var/lock/mailman/ directory. They look like the following one mymaillist.lock.plesk.server.com.26547.0

  3. Start mailman service:
    # service mailman start
