Symptoms

Unable to start services from /etc/init.d/ due to permission denied error, for example:

/etc/init.d/named start
-bash: /etc/init.d/named: Permission denied

Cause

Incorrect permissions for the service.

Resolution

Make sure that service is executable, assign correct permissions:

# chmod +x /etc/init.d/named

Try to start service again.
