Why disabled Greylisting for several domains on a server still being applied globally with SKIP during call 'grey' handler entries in maillog?

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Question

Why greylisting is started for domains that have disabled greylisting option in Mail Settings ?

Greylisting is enabled server-wide but is disabled for example.com. Still, it seems that greylisting is still being applied for example.com when incoming mails to *@example.com are received:

Starting greylisting filter...
handlers_stderr: SKIP
SKIP during call 'grey' handler

Answer

Greylisting filter still being started when a new message is coming for a mailbox with disabled greylisting option. But it will automatically SKIP this email without actually checking it. This can be checked here:

# /usr/local/psa/bin/grey_listing -id example.com
Grey listing for domain is disabled
SUCCESS: Gathering information for 'example.com' complete.

When greylisting is enabled on a subscription, on the other hand, greylisting filter will mark an email as DEFER as it is being actually applied. So Greylisting starts anyway whether it is disabled or enabled on a subscription. But it will not check an email if this option is disabled.
