Plesk is down after ugprade: Unable to init lock manager shared memory file

Symptoms

After an upgrade of Plesk to version 12.x, it displays a '502 Bad Gateway nginx' error.

The following error is shown in /var/log/sw-cp-server :

2014/07/04 13:56:22 [crit] 21737#0: *1 connect() to unix:/var/run/sw-engine.sock failed (2: No such file or directory) while connecting to upstream, client: ::1, server: , request: "POST /check-plesk.php HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/sw-engine.sock:", host: "localhost:8443"

Restarting the psa service can give the following error:

# /etc/init.d/psa restart
PSA is down, performing full restart.
Starting psa... Starting sw-engine-fpm: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error'
what(): Unable to init lock manager shared memory file: Unable to create new lock manager shared memory storage. Please, try to restart sw-engine service as root.
/bin/bash: line 1: 31024 Aborted /usr/sbin/sw-engine-fpm --fpm-config /etc/sw-engine/sw-engine-fpm.conf -c /usr/local/psa/admin/conf/php.ini
[FAILED]

Cause

The /dev/shm mount point is missing in the /etc/fstab file.

This is Plesk internal issue with ID #PPPM-1655 , which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates

Workaround

  1. Add the /dev/shm line to the /etc/fstab file:

    # grep shm /etc/fstab
    shm /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
  2. Mount /dev/shm and restart the psa service:

    # mount /dev/shm
    # /etc/init.d/psa restart
