How to block WordPress Pingback DDoS attacks with Nginx and Apache?

Answer

The following additional directives can be added on a domain level at Subscriptions > domain_name > Websites & Domains :

for Apache:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Wordpress
RewriteRule . - [F,L]

for Nginx:

if ($http_user_agent ~ Wordpress) {
return 403;
}

Note: replace Wordpress word in the directives above with the appropriate User Agent names.
