Unable to start MySQL: unknown variable

Symptoms

  1. Unable to start MySQL service. The following error can be found in %plesk_dir%MySQL\\Data\\yourservername.err :

    [ERROR] C:\\Program Files\\MySQL\\MySQL Server 5.6\\bin\\mysqld.exe: unknown variable 'table_cache=256'
    [ERROR] Aborting
  2. MySQL upgrade interrupted. The following error can be found in C:\\ParallelsInstaller\\autoinstaller3.log :

    Errors in MySQL error log file:
    2016-09-07 21:30:18 46816 [ERROR] C:\\Program Files\\MySQL\\MySQL Server 5.6\\bin\\mysqld.exe: unknown variable 'table_cache=1024'
    2016-09-07 21:30:18 46816 [ERROR] Aborting

Cause

A declared variable is unknown in MySQL configuration.

Resolution

Disable the unknown variable in MySQL confiruation file:

  1. Open my.ini in Notepad, the configuration file is located in %plesk_dir%Databases\\MySQL\\data\\my.ini

  2. Use ' ; ' character to comment the following line:

    table_cache=256

    It should look like:

    ;table_cache=256

    After that save the changes.

  3. Open Services MMC console: Run > services.msc

  4. Start the service MySQL Server > right click > Start .

In case of the upgrade interruption, follow the steps #1 and #2, then initiate MySQL upgrade to 5.6 version via the following command or through GUI:

plesk installer --console
