Fail2Ban doesn't show banned IP addresses in Plesk and SSH jail does not work because no failed login attempts are looged in /var/log/secure

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

Fail2Ban doesn't show banned IP addresses in Tools & Settings > Fail2Ban > Banned IP Addresses although all jails are active.

"SSH" jail does not work: IP does not get banned after 5 failed login attempts

Nothing is written in /var/log/secure when trying to use incorrect password to login to the server via ssh

rsyslog service is missing on a server:

# service rsyslog status
Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)

Cause

Missing rsyslog service prevents the system from writing system logs.

Resolution

Install rsyslog service:

# yum install rsyslog
