Configuring root hints on the server

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Windows

Symptoms

When nslookup is launched using custom DNS server, it displays strings like:

>nslookup example.com 1.1.1.1
(root) nameserver = g.root-servers.net
(root) nameserver = h.root-servers.net
(root) nameserver = i.root-servers.net
(root) nameserver = j.root-servers.net

Cause

Root servers are configured and recursion is enabled on the DNS server.

Resolution

To disable recursion on the server:

  1. Open DNS Manager
  2. In the console tree, right-click the DNS server, then click Properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. In Server options, select the Disable recursion check box, and then click OK.

To configure Root Hints on the DNS server:

  1. Open DNS Manager
  2. In the console tree, right-click the DNS server, then click Properties.
  3. Click the Root Hints tab.
