Symptoms
When nslookup is launched using custom DNS server, it displays strings like:
>nslookup example.com 1.1.1.1
(root) nameserver = g.root-servers.net
(root) nameserver = h.root-servers.net
(root) nameserver = i.root-servers.net
(root) nameserver = j.root-servers.net
Cause
Root servers are configured and recursion is enabled on the DNS server.
Resolution
To disable recursion on the server:
- Open DNS Manager
- In the console tree, right-click the DNS server, then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- In Server options, select the Disable recursion check box, and then click OK.
To configure Root Hints on the DNS server:
- Open DNS Manager
- In the console tree, right-click the DNS server, then click Properties.
- Click the Root Hints tab.
