Unable to send a message using Webmail: There was an error sending your message: sendmail

Symptoms

An attempt to send a message via Webmail fails with an error:

There was an error sending your message: sendmail

It is also logged to the /var/log/psa-horde/psa-horde.log file.

The /usr/local/psa/var/log/maillog may have the following error:

postfix/sendmail[28763]: fatal: Recipient addresses must be specified on the command line or via the -t option

Cause

The /etc/php.ini has an additional disable_functions directive that affects Horde webmail functionality.

Resolution

Make sure that the exec or open functions are not disabled, i.e., they are not in listed in the disable_functions directive in /etc/php.ini file:

# grep -i disable_functions /etc/php.ini
disable_functions =

To check if the disable_functions affects Webmail:

  1. Comment out "disable_functions" directive in the /etc/php.ini file
  2. Restart Apache:

    # service httpd restart
  3. Try to send email again.

If it works, then exclude the functions from the disable_functions list one by one, restart Apache, and check email sending through Webmail.Once the function that should not be disabled is found, exclude it from the disabled functions list.

Additional Information:

Other PHP functions, if disabled, can also affect Horde webmail functionality.

Please use the same "exclusion method" to determine what function causes the issue. Once it is found, exclude it from the disabled functions list.
