Scheduled task is not working: failed to launch action

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Windows

Symptoms

  • A scheduled Plesk task does not work.
  • The following errors can be found in Windows Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler Library > <click on a task name> > History (tab):

Task Scheduler failed to launch action "C:\\Windows\\system32\\cmd.exe" in instance "{f7a1d0da-98b4-4a9f-91d2-2896b4f63301}" of task "\\Plesk Scheduler Task #3405a6a4afb681260841b1bf769e15ac". Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942487.

Task Scheduler failed to start instance "{f7a1d0da-98b4-4a9f-91d2-2896b4f63301}" of "\\Plesk Scheduler Task #3405a6a4afb681260841b1bf769e15ac" task for user "WORKGROUP\\USER$" . Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942487.

Cause

The total length of the command with arguments in Windows Task Scheduler is more than 260 symbols. This is Plesk bug with ID PPPM-4588 which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Resolution

  1. Create a PowerShell *.ps1 script file in the domain's httpdocs directory.

  2. Create a scheduled task in Plesk that executes that script file. For example:

    C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -c C:\vhosts\example.com\httpdocs\script.ps1
