Unable to switch DNS server: Unable to set BIND DNS Server as the default DNS Server

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 11.x for Windows
  • Plesk 12.5 for Windows

Note: This article has the reference to the issue with the fix available:

  • #PPPM-4688 "After upgrading from Plesk 11.0 or earlier to Plesk 12.5, if Microsoft DNS Server was used, users could no longer manage DNS settings."

Symptoms

After upgrade from Plesk 11 to Plesk 12.5, having MS DNS server set as default, nothing is selected under Tools & Settings > Server Management > Server Components > DNS server . An attempt to select BIND the following error appear:

Error: Unable to set BIND DNS Server 9.10.3-P4 <id:ebd72b3> as the default DNS Server: defpackagemng failed: The system cannot find the file specified. (Error code 2) at lookup subKey=SOFTWARE\\Plesk\\PSA Config\\Config\\Packages\\dnsserver\\msdns value=dll

at doSetPackage(dnsserver, msdns)(VPackageManager::doSetPackage line 419)

at execute console command --set(vconsoleapp::start line 100)

Cause

msdns registry entry removal at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Wow6432Node\\PLESK\\PSA Config\\Config\\Packages\\dnsserver\\

Internal Plesk issue #PPPM-4688 that was fixed in Plesk Onyx.

Resolution

Upgrade to the latest Plesk version .
