Apache crashes randomly: httpd dead but pid file exists

Applicable to:

Symptoms

Apache crashes randomly on the Plesk 11.5 server.

    # service httpd status
unlimited
httpd dead but pid file exists

The info about installed system:

# rpm -qa | grep httpd
httpd-tools-2.2.15-29.el6_4.cloudlinux.x86_64
httpd-2.2.15-29.el6_4.cloudlinux.x86_64

Cause

Apache web server has crashed.

Resolution

Check that Apache is updated to the latest stable version:

# yum check-update httpd

Try to disable some additionally configured modules, for example - mod_pagespeed.so .

If the issue persists create Apache core dump as it described here #213366549
