Restore from backup fails: Wrong syntax for command's '-owner' parameter. '' does not match the pattern '/^[^\\s]{1,255}$/'.

Symptoms

  1. Backup restoration fails with the following error:

WARNING: (client object 'johndoe') Failed deployment of domain example.com

    WARNING: () Execution of /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/api-cli/domain.php --create example.com -owner '' -do-not-apply-skeleton -notify false -guid 75f2060a-3b61-49b4-84d7-7c2b730c1a93 -vendor-guid 8385bd43-516a-4067-9c42-0a22bad178d7 -creation-date 2014-06-29 -ip 203.0.113.2 -ignore-nonexistent-options failed with return code 1.

    Stderr is
Wrong syntax for command's '-owner' parameter. '' does not match the pattern '/^[^\\s]{1,255}$/'.
  2. In backup repository there are *.xml files with additional ~ symbol at the end:

    clients/johndoe/domains/example.com/full_domain.tld_info_1507240336-new.xml~

Cause

The script, which replaces passwords, from KB article # 213390629 creates *.xml~ files out of *.xml files.

Such behavior is known as software issue with id #PPPM-3140 , which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Resolution

As a workaround, move all *.xml~ files to another location before starting a restoration process.
