FTP login is too slow

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

Connection to FTP is possible, but slow.Most of FTP clients time out after 20 seconds of waiting.

Numerous failed authentication attempts are registered in /var/log/secure :

Sep 25 11:40:16 ds201 sshd[9967]: Failed password for root from 203.0.113.2 port 52852 ssh2
Sep 25 11:40:17 ds201 sshd[9968]: Received disconnect from 203.0.113.2: 11:
Sep 25 11:40:17 ds201 sshd[9967]: PAM 2 more authentication failures; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=203.0.113.2 user=root
Sep 25 11:40:18 ds201 sshd[9973]: Failed password for root from 203.0.113.2 port 47206 ssh2
Sep 25 11:40:19 ds201 sshd[9977]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=203.0.113.2 user=root

[root@ds201 ~]# grep 203.0.113.2 /var/log/secure | wc -l
6266

Cause

The server is being brute forced.

Resolution

Install and configure Fail2ban component. The following instructions can be used for it:
