Bind DNS service failed to start on Ubuntu

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

BIND on Ubuntu failed to start.

/var/log/syslog have the following error message:

Sep  6 17:22:45 named[18997]: open: /etc/named.conf: permission denied
Sep 6 17:22:45 named[18997]: loading configuration: permission denied
Sep 6 17:22:45 named[18997]: exiting (due to fatal error)

/etc/default/bind9 contains the following:

# startup options for the server
OPTIONS="-u bind"

Cause

/etc/default/bind9 which was initially modified by Plesk during DNS service configuration, was rewritten by Ubuntu bind9 package or it was removed some time ago and this can be reason of creation a new bind9 defaults file

Resolution

Ensure that /etc/default/bind9 have the following content:

OPTIONS="${OPTIONS} -t /var/named/run-root  -c /etc/named.conf -u bind -n 2"
