Parallels Plesk Panel installation or upgrade fails with an error like "ERROR while trying to check the host name."

Symptoms

Parallels Plesk Panel installation or upgrade fails with an error like:

ERROR while trying to check the host name

or:

Your host name must resolve to the correct IP address of your server, unless you are using network address translation (NAT).
Please quit Parallels Installer, fix the host name resolution problem, and they try installing again.

Cause

Server hostname can not be resolved properly or server IP address mismatches with hostname from /etc/hosts file.

Resolution

Parallels Plesk Panel (PP) for Unix performs additional checks for the hostname . In comparison to PP 7.5 Reloaded, it checks that:

  1. The server hostname can be resolved.

  2. The IP address for this hostname from the /etc/hosts file and the DNS query match.

There is a workaround for this problem: you can set the following environment variable prior to PP installation:

# export PLESK_DISABLE_HOSTNAME_CHECKING=yes

This will disable all hostname checks and will make the installer use the first of the system IP addresses where needed during the installation, instead of using the IP which the server hostname resolves to.

This is not recommended because several critical services (like Bind and Apache) cannot work properly with a non-resolvable server hostname.

Generally, you should follow the recommendations in the article and also make sure that your server hostname resolves to the same IP address which is specified in /etc/hosts file for this hostname.
