Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk 11.x for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux
  • Plesk 12.5 for Windows

Symptoms

When trying to access domain example.com over FTP the following error is shown:

530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

Cause

  1. Incorrect user name/password pair.
  2. FTP user user does not have enough permissions to access one's home directory.
  3. Home directory does not exist.

Resolution

  1. Make sure that the right user name and password are used:

    • Set a new password for the user via Plesk in Domains > example.com > FTP accounts > user
  2. Check that the user's home directory exists.

  3. Check where the home directory for user is:

        # plesk db 'select home from sys_users where login="user"'
    +------------------------------+
    | home |
    +------------------------------+
    | /var/www/vhosts/example.com |
    +------------------------------+
  4. Compare this directory with the one from /etc/passwd :

        # grep '^user:' /etc/passwd
    user:x:10001:2524::/var/www/vhosts/example.com:/bin/false
    • Rename the user to any new name through the Plesk under Domains > example.com > FTP accounts > user and then rename it back.
  5. Check if home directory exists and has the proper permissions:

    # ls -lad /var/www/vhosts/example.com
    d--------- 14 user psaserv 4096 2008-02-22 11:50 /var/www/vhosts/example.com
    • Set correct permissions:

      # chmod 755 /var/www/vhosts/example.com
    • If home directory does not exist create it:

      # mkdir /var/www/vhosts/example.com
      # chown user:psaserv /var/www/vhosts/example.com
      # chmod 755 /var/www/vhosts/example.com
