How to understand why SMTP uses a lot of traffic?

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Windows

Question

SMTP usage is high. How to find the reason of this high traffic usage?

Answer

SMTP traffic is calculated for both outgoing and incoming messages. Check what takes more:

  1. Find domain_id in psa database:

       mysql> select id from domains where name='example.tld';
    11
  2. Use this ID and check SMTP bandwidth:

    Incoming :

    mysql> select sum(smtp_in)/1024/1024, date from DomainsTraffic where dom_id=11 and date>'2016-01-31' group by date;
    +------------------------+------------+
    | sum(smtp_in)/1024/1024 | date |
    +------------------------+------------+
    | 785.00337696 | 2016-02-01 |
    | 974.47676849 | 2016-02-02 |
    | 811.88494396 | 2016-02-03 |
    | 109.08377743 | 2016-02-04 |
    | 130.79602242 | 2016-02-05 |
    | 93.77025127 | 2016-02-06 |
    | 21.60674572 | 2016-02-07 |
    | 648.86913490 | 2016-02-08 |
    | 629.45224380 | 2016-02-09 |
    | 699.78520393 | 2016-02-10 |
    | 0.08653164 | 2016-02-11 |
    +------------------------+------------+

    Outgoing:

        mysql> select sum(smtp_out)/1024/1024,date from DomainsTraffic where dom_id=11 and date>'2016-01-31' group by date;
    +-------------------------+------------+

    | sum(smtp_out)/1024/1024 | date |
    +-------------------------+------------+
    | 11.16415691 | 2016-02-01 |
    | 4.69897747 | 2016-02-02 |
    | 12.83475780 | 2016-02-03 |
    | 4.49449539 | 2016-02-04 |
    | 0.66100121 | 2016-02-05 |
    | 4.24992657 | 2016-02-06 |
    | 0.59559631 | 2016-02-07 |
    | 7.87699604 | 2016-02-08 |
    | 7.83700275 | 2016-02-09 |
    | 8.79119968 | 2016-02-10 |
    | 0.00323105 | 2016-02-11 |
    +-------------------------+------------+

    From the example above you may see that SMTP traffic is from incoming emails.

  3. By default Plesk keeps MailEnable logs for one day only, configure to keep the logs longer: #213397889

  4. After that you may use MailEnable article to analyze traffic.
