Unable to add an IP address: ifmng failed: SIOCGIFADDR: Cannot assign requested address SIOCSIFBROADCAST

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

When attempting to add IP ranges in Plesk > Tools & Settings > IP Addresses > Add IP Address the following error appears:

Error: ifmng failed: SIOCGIFADDR: Cannot assign requested address SIOCSIFBROADCAST: Cannot assign requested address SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address /sbin/ifconfig 'eth0:32' '1.2.3.4' netmask '255.255.255.240' up exited with non-zero status 255

Cause

The issue is caused by the fact that such IP already assigned to a network interface:

    # ip a | grep 1.2.3.4
inet 1.2.3.4/28 brd 4.3.2.1 scope global eth0:19

This is Plesk bug with ID #PPPM-4569 , which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Resolution

  1. Shut down or remove the network interface using CLI. Here is an example for eth0:19 interface:

    ifconfig eth0:19 down
  2. Add it back using Plesk functionality: Plesk > Tools & Settings > IP Addresses > Add IP Address .

Note: When using Add IP Address functionality, Plesk adds IP addresses to OS and to Plesk. If it is needed to add all IP addresses on the server only to Plesk, Plesk > Tools & Settings > IP Addresses > Reread IP option can be used.
