How password complexity is calculated in Plesk.

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 11.0 for Linux
  • Plesk 11.5 for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

How password complexity is calculated in Plesk.

Resolution

The relations below reflect when Plesk considers password to be secure or insecure basing on password score:

    'Very Weak' > -1,
'Weak' > 15,
'Mediocre' > 24,
'Strong' > 34,
'Stronger' > 44,

The password score is being formed is below:

0. By default, password score is equal to 0,
1. If password length < 5 then password score gets additioanal 3 points
2. If password length < 8, but greater than 4 then password score gets additional 6 points
3. If password length < 16, but greater than 7 then password score gets additional 12 points,
4. If password length >= 16, then the password score gets additional 18 points,
5. If password contains at least one lower case letter, then password score gets 1 additional point,
6. If password contains at least one upper case letter, then password score gets 5 additional point,
7. If password contains at least one number, then password score gets 5 additional points,
8. If password contains at least three numbers, then password score gets additional 5 points,
9. If password contains at least one special char (!, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *, ?, ~), then password score gets additional 5 points,
10. If password contains both upper and lower case letters, then password score gets additional 2 points,
11. If password contains both letters and numbers, then password score gets additional 2 points,
11. If password containers letters and numbers and specials chars, then password score gets additional 2 points.

For example:

If password is '12345qwert!@#$%QWERT' and password score is 'score' , then checking all the items above consequently:

0. score = 0
1. score = 0
2. score = 0
3. score = 0
4. score = 0 + 18 = 18
5. score = 18 + 1 = 19
6. score = 19 + 5 = 24
7. score = 24 + 5 = 29
8. score = 29 + 5 = 34
9. score = 34 + 5 = 39
10. score = 39 + 2 = 41
11. score = 41 + 2 = 43
12. score = 43 + 2 = 45

Thus, based on calculations above our password is 'Stronger' ('Very strong' in Plesk definitions).
