Unable to create backup: System user has no read access

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

When trying to perform a backup in Plesk, the following error is encountered:

<message id="b9101565-7ecb-4aa2-8cd8-4cdff65521b1" severity="warning" code="msgtext">
<description>For security reason backup is performed on behalf of subscription system user. System user has no read access to path/to/file_or_folder file.</description>
</message>

Cause

As stated in the error message, the backup is performed on behalf of the subscription system user. This user lacks the necessary permissions for copying a file (or a folder).

There may be more than one instance of this inconsistency. The files which are affected will not be backed up.

Resolution

  1. Check the permissions and owner for the folder/file mentioned in the error, as well as all other files which may have incorrect permissions. Make sure that at least the system user has the following permissions:

  2. r-x ( read and execute ) for all directories in the tree that is backed up

  3. r-- ( read ) for all files in those directories

  4. Set the proper permissions with the chown and chmod commands. Please refer to their manual pages:

    # chmod +r path/to/file_or_folder
    # chown systemuser:psacln path/to/file_or_folder

Also, use chmod +x on folders (the traverse permission). Optionally, use the -R flag to perform a recursive operation.
