Unable to access the webmail: Error connecting to mail server

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk Onyx for Linux
  • Plesk 11.x for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Windows
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

  1. Unable to access the webmail, an attempt fails with the following error:

    Error connecting to mail server
  2. The following error can be observed in the /var/log/psa-horde/psa-horde.log :

    2014-04-10T16:49:35+02:00 ERR: HORDE [horde] FAILED LOGIN for info@example.com (info@mauroalfieri.it) [X.X.X.X] to Horde [pid 525926 on line 211 of "/usr/share/psa-horde/login.php"]
  3. Imap connection works but it starts with connecting to IPv6:

    # telnet localhost 143
    Trying ::1...
    telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection timed out
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
    Connected to localhost.
    Escape character is '^]'.

Cause

The issue is caused by the fact that connection to localhost resolves to IPv6 loop-back interface.

Resolution

Make localhost to resolve to IPv4:

  • disable IPv6 loopback "::1" entry in the /etc/hosts (comment it out)

    # cat /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
    #::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6

    OR

  • remove 'localhost localhost.localdomain' from IPv6 loopback "::1" in the /etc/hosts

    # cat /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
    ::1 localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6
