[Info] What kind of backup protection does Plesk 12.5 support?

Question

What kind of protection is used with Plesk 12.5 Backup system?
Is it possible to create a backup without encryption?

Answer

Plesk 12.5 has two security options for Backup creation:

  • Plesk's encryption key . By default, all backups created in Plesk are encrypted with an internal key. The key is unique to each Plesk installation. Encrypting backups with Plesk keys is convenient but has certain limitations: when users restore backups created in other Plesk installations they lose some data. To prevent data loss, the administrator should restore such backups and specify the encryption key with which the backup was encrypted.

  • Specified password . If you have several Plesk installations, we recommend that you protect backups with a server-wide password.

More information can be found in Plesk Administrator's Guide .

In current version of Plesk it is not possible to create local backup without encryption. This particular design was chosen due to security concerns.

However it is possible to create such backup on personal FTP repository and then restore it on another Plesk server.
More information can be found in Using an FTP Storage section of Plesk Administrator's Guide.
