Postfix fails to start: socket: Too many open files

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

Postfix fails to start. In /var/log/maillog the following message appears:

postfix/master[387339]: fatal: socket: Too many open files

Postfix service goes down, when some mail settings are being updated in Plesk.

Cause

The maximum number of open files is exceeded

Resolution

Increase maximum number of open files:

# ulimit -n 8192

To increase it these limits permanently:

  1. add the following lines in /etc/security/limits.conf file before # End of file line:

    # tail -n4 /etc/security/limits.conf
    * soft nofile 8192
    * hard nofile 8192

    # End of file
  2. Reboot the server to apply these changes.
