How to upgrade custom PHP 5 for Plesk?

How to update PHP 5 on a Windows server with Plesk 8.x and 9.x installed.

In order to upgrade PHP 5 to the necessary version (other than shipped with Plesk), please perform the following steps:

  1. Stop Plesk services ( Control Panel and all that are included in the Plesk Run-Time section);
  2. Rename folder %plesk_dir%\\Additional\\PleskPHP5 to the orig_PleskPHP5 ;
  3. Create a new folder %plesk_dir%\\Additional\\PleskPHP5 ;
  4. Download necessary version of PHP, unzip its content, and copy it to the newly created folder PleskPHP5;
  5. Copy the file php.ini from the old folder orig_PleskPHP5 to the new one;
  6. Make sure the permissions are inherited;
  7. Start Plesk services;
  8. Click the Refresh button in the Components Management section in Plesk and check if you can see the new PHP version there.

How to update PHP 5 on a Windows server with Plesk 10.x and 11.x installed.

  1. Stop Plesk services using Plesk Service Monitor ( Control Panel and all that are included in the Plesk Run-Time section);
  2. Rename the %plesk_dir%\\Additional\\PleskPHP53 folder to the orig_PleskPHP53 ;

    Note : There are three folders in %plesk_dir%\\Additional\\ :

    • PHP for PHP 4.4.9;
    • PleskPHP5 for PHP 5.2.17;
    • PleskPHP53 for PHP 5.3.10.

    Please take this into consideration and rename the appropriate folder depending on the version of PHP you would like to update.

  3. Create a new folder %plesk_dir%\\Additional\\PleskPHP53 ;

  4. Download necessary version of PHP, unzip its content, and copy it to the newly created folder PleskPHP53 ;
  5. Copy the file php.ini from the old folder orig_PleskPHP53 to the new one;
  6. Make sure the permissions are inherited;
  7. Start Plesk services;
  8. Click the Refresh button in the Components Management section in Plesk and check the new PHP version there.

Note: The same steps can be performed for PHP 5.4

Please also note that you need to refer to Release notes for Windows-based OS for Plesk 10.4 and for Plesk 11.0 to know the supported versions of PHP to avoid using non-supported version.

You need to be aware that PHP versions other than that shipped with Plesk were not tested. The procedure described here does not affect the PHP version that Plesk uses for itself.

Additional information

Plesk is distributed with its own PHP that processes the control panel. That PHP cannot and shoud not be upgraded with the instructions.
