fail2ban won't start up

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

fail2ban won't start up the following error is displayed:

Error: Unable to make action: Unable to manage service by f2bmng: WARNING Wrong value for 'maxretry' in 'ssh'. Using default one: 'None'
WARNING Wrong value for 'bantime' in 'ssh'. Using default one: 'None'
ERROR Error in action definition action = iptables[name=SSH, port=ssh, protocol=tcp]
ERROR Errors in jail 'ssh'. Skipping...
ERROR:f2bmng:Failed to start fail2ban service
('--start', 'fail2ban')

Cause

Error in jail 'ssh'

Resolution

  1. Edit /etc/fail2ban/jail.local and mentioned jail by its name.
  2. remove redundant action = from action definition.It should look alike :

    [ssh]enabled = truefilter = sshdaction = iptables[name=SSH, port=ssh, protocol=tcp]logpath = /var/log/secure

Note: portname and logpath can be differ
