Cannot connect to FTP in passive mode: PASV FTP error ECONNABORTED

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.0 for Windows
  • Plesk 12.5 for Windows

Symptoms

  1. Server is behind NAT
  2. Attempt to access FTP in passive mode using external IP fails with error:

    Error: Disconnected from server: ECONNABORTED - Connection aborted
    Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing
  3. Attempt to access FTP in passive mode using internal IP fails with error:

    425-Cannot open data connection.
    Win32 error: The network connection was aborted by the local system.
    Error details: Client IP on the control channel didn't match the client IP on the data channel.

Cause

Misconfiguration of FTP settings in IIS

Resolution

  1. Go to IIS > Server-wide settings > FTP Firewall Support
  2. Check that passive FTP port range is specified and IP address of edge firewall is set in External IP of Firewall field.
  3. Remove duplicated IP address from FTP Firewall Support in FTP site settings.
