xinetd service does not start automatically after reboot

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

The service xinetd does not start automatically after reboot.

There are no related errors in log files.

However, it is possible to start xinetd service manually without any issues.

Cause

xinetd service is disabled in upstart configuration:

# cat /etc/init/xinetd.override
manual

Resolution

The stanza manual will prevent Upstart from automatically loading the service on boot. Any service with the .override ending will take precedence over the original service file. In such case it is only possible to start the service manually.

To start the service automatically on boot, remove the .override file:

# rm /etc/init/xinetd.override
