Website constantly goes down: mod_fcgid: can't apply process slot

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk 11.x for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

  1. Site is constantly going in and out of service. There are errors in /var/www/vhosts/example.com/logs/error_log :

    [Wed Jan 27 11:38:57 2016] [warn] [client 10.20.30.40] mod_fcgid: can't apply process slot for /var/www/cgi-bin/cgi_wrapper/cgi_wrapper
  2. There is a huge amount of requests from specific IPs access_log file for the affected website:

    # tail -n 10000  /var/www/vhosts/example.com/statistics/logs/access_log |cut -f 1 -d ' '|sort|uniq -c|sort -nr|more
    6533 10.20.30.40
    2832 11.21.31.41
    95 12.22.32.42
    72 13.23.33.43

Cause

Website is under DDoS attack

Resolution

Contact server administrator and configure server security (block IPs of attackers with firewall, enable Fail2ban, etc)
