How to access a website when DNS changes are not propagated yet

Applicable to:

  • Plesk

Symptoms

A domain has just been created or migrated to Plesk. It is known that some time is needed to propagate DNS changes, but how can domain content be accessed via Web before it is done?

Resolution

The website can be accessed using this temporary URL:

 https://PleskserverIP:8443/sitepreview/http/example.com/

or the following record can be added to the hosts file (' %systemroot%\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts ' on Windows and ' /etc/hosts ' on Linux) on the computer, from which the website should be browsed:

203.0.113.2 example.com

' 203.0.113.2 ' should be replaced with actual IP address of the website on the Plesk server. It can be obtained by means of ' domain ' utility:

  • on Linux
    # /usr/local/psa/bin/domain --info example.com | grep IP
    IP address: 203.0.113.2

OR

  • on Windows
    "%plesk_cli%\\domain" --info example.com | findstr IP
    IP address: 203.0.113.2
