Cause

Incorrect permissions/ownership of the crontab file.

Resolution

  1. Make sure the valid permissions/ownership of the of the crontab file are set:

    # stat /usr/bin/crontab

    Access: (4755/-rwsr-xr-x) Uid: ( 0/ root) Gid: ( 0/ root)
    Access: 2015-07-29 21:30:16.784326826 +0600
    Modify: 2013-11-23 19:43:14.000000000 +0700
    Change: 2014-10-29 05:20:45.691965205 +0600
  2. If it is not, then correct permissions/ownership and restart crond service:

    # chown root.root /usr/bin/crontab
    # chmod 4755 /usr/bin/crontab
    # /etc/init.d/crond restart
