Apache can not start

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

Apache does not start on Ubuntu 14.04. The following error appears:

# service apache start

Apache is running a threaded MPM, but your PHP Module is not compiled to be threadsafe. You need to recompile PHP.
AH00013: Pre-configuration failed
httpd.service: control process exited, code=exited status=1

Cause

php and mpm_prefork modules are not enabled in Apache configuration.

Resolution

  1. Check if modules are disabled for Apache:

    # apache2ctl -M | egrep "mpm|php"
    Syntax OK
    #
  2. Enable php and mpm_prefork modules:

    # ln -s /etc/apache2/mods-available/php5.conf /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.conf
    # ln -s /etc/apache2/mods-available/mpm_prefork.conf /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/mpm_prefork.conf
    # ln -s /etc/apache2/mods-available/mpm_prefork.load /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/mpm_prefork.load
  3. Reload Apache configuration:

    # service apache reload
