Answer

Note: this instruction for client database server only. It is not possible to upgrade MySQL server with Plesk database.

The easiest upgrade method is to use Plesk Installer. Just type the following command in command line.

plesk installer

MySQL upgrade manual from the vendor can be also used.

In general, instructions are the following:

  1. Create a full dump of all databases, this dump will be helpful in case something go wrong:

    "%plesk_dir%\Databases\MySQL51\bin\mysqldump" -uadmin -p<PASSWORD> -P3306 --all-databases --routines > mysql_backup.sql
  2. Check MySQL 5.1 architecture:

    mysql> SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'version_compile_machine';

After that, download MySQL 5.6 with a corresponding archtecture at: Download MySQL Community Server 5.6

  3. Back up the following folders:

    %plesk_dir%\Databases\MySQL
    %plesk_dir%\Databases\MySQL51
  4. Stop MySQL service:

    NET STOP MySQL
  5. Rename old MySQL51 folder, extract downloaded archive from step 2 to %plesk_dir%\Databases\ and rename it to MySQL51.

  6. Start MySQL server:

    NET START MySQL

Note: if MySQL server cannot be started with "Access is denied" open Plesk Reconfigurator > Check component and folder permissions > MySQL 5.1 Server and repair component permissions.

  7. Upgrade MySQL:

    "%plesk_bin%\mysqlmng.exe" --upgrade-local-service

    For Plesk 11.5 or above:

    "%plesk_dir%\Databases\MySQL51\bin\mysql_upgrade" -uadmin -p<PASSWORD> -P3306
